KATHMANDU, MAR 29 -
Prabal Gurung— the young designer beloved by Michelle Obama and Oprah Winfrey to name just a few—is already known for being “from Nepal”. In this sense, perhaps he was already an ambassador of sorts before he became the official goodwill ambassador of Maiti Nepal, an organisation that staunchly works against human trafficking.
“The suffering of millions of children and women, who have been trafficked and subject to various forms of exploitation can be reduced by those who realise that they have resources and abilities to support ani-trafficking initiatives,” says Gurung. He believes that the campaign against human trafficking can be strengthened by his unique contributions. Gurung, who recently recieved rave reviews for his fall 2011 collection has dressed some of the most beautiful women in the world, including Demi Moore and Sonam Kapoor. Maiti Nepal sees this collaborative step with the young designer as a starting point of support to the initiatives of Maiti Nepal. The organisation hopes to engage public awareness in its activities with the attachment of a popular personality like Gurung to its name.
“A society from free human traffickign is possible and we must realise that it is our responsibility to make this world a better place for all mankind. By simply stating our desire, we sow the seeds of great change,” says Gurung.
There has been a symbolic agreement between Maiti Nepal and Gurung to work together for the abolishment of human trafficking.
