We recently got married when we went to Nepal. I have a marriage certificate from nepal, for which I have an english translation. What must I do to make our marriage offical in Minnesota, US? Can I just use the certificate from Nepal as proof. What about when applying for green card and such. I am in H1B status and wife is in F1 status, we are both Nepalese citizens. I would greatly appreciate your input, especially personal experience. Thank you

As far as I know, you don't need to do anything...mention "married" where required.

Thanks guys...I will call the court house. When my company sponsors my green card, I wanted to know if I need to provide them with a US marriage certificate. I do have a Nepali marriage certificate.

I think mech already gave you the answer.

What ever you have from Nepal in English will be suffice for your purpose. But check what else documents you have have with you and make it available. If you got stocked like this  I wonder how long it will take to collect all pertinent documents when your employer give the green single?

Try to find with your friends and family who had filed GC  for the documents you have to be in hand.

Marriage certificate from Nepal will serve the purpose, no need to go to court here and do anything.  You cannot go to court in MN and re-marry a person you are married to already.

I think Sedif has two separate questions. First one... "What must I do to make our marriage offical in Minnesota, US?"   IF one of you is a US Citizen and resides in Minnesota, then you guys can go to court to make it a official record in US by providing Foreign country marriage certificate. Since you guys are NEPALI, so far, there is nothing you can do.

For second question, please read all other responses.

Good Luck

To list my wife as a beneficiary, I showed my employer an English Translation of my 'bibaha darta'. So, I think you need nothing more than what you have already got---the marriage certificate. Not sure for other purposes.

For immigration purposes you can get your marriage registered at the town clerk's office. For more info, visit your cown/city clerk's office of their website.
