Many of us when we come from Nepal experience cultural shock. What was yours??
One of the biggest schocks to me was when students in class sat with their shoes facing the teacher. I thought that was totally disrespectful. I would also get surprized when total strangers greeted me.

This one is also about Root beer_ When I was in ktm working for an INGO, one of my american friend invite me to the Fora darbar ( American club) in kantipath and he has his wife and three young kids, when they order food and drink the youngest child order root beer and I was so shocked and asked my boss , " How can you allow a 4 year old child to have beer?" later I also had the root beer.

For me, comparing cultural shock within our country itself is unparalleled as that with the cultural shock between Nepal and other Western countries.

Being an inhabitant of central region of Nepal, once I had an opportunity to go to Chitwan, Southern region for my job related excursion, and seeing all those naked guys(wrapping with those so called thong around their lower bottom), my goodness, that is the first and last biggest cultural shock I have ever faced in my whole freaking life.

People in Canada are REALLY cautious in commenting the personal choice of others, in fact, most of them dont care it at all, just take it for easy. And commenting on one's sexual orientation is very rare. Well, when i came here, i had no freaking idea about this so-called "sexual orientation". Had heard that some khaires and khairenis have sex with animals but didnt know anything abt homosexuals.

And my accent was dead poor when i first came here. So, besides me, there was one more canadian guy with my prof. The next day, I went to the office earlier than anybody. After a while, the guy appeared. It was his habit to jog to the office. So he came panting and sweating. To appear extra-dear, I commented " Oh you seem so hot". He was quite taken. Then, seeing him surprised, I clarified, "I mean, sweat". But my pronunciation was like "sweet". This guy was really surprised but did not say anything. He acted a bit differently with me though. Even when we met in the washroom, he used to quickly rush out. I thought he was just shy. Eventually, we became very good friends and probably he learnt what my "orientation" was, it was only over a beer after a few months that he revealed how he had thought of me before.

So, my lesson is, pronouce it स्वेट and not स्वीट though in Nepal we used to call a sweater a स्वीटर. And dont call anybody "hot", better call "worked out" - the same guy told me.

My biggest shock was seeing that students are actually allowed to eat in class. My first day into this Canadian high school (that was three years ago, when I had just arrived in Canada), I was in my Math class and everybody in the room was waiting for the teacher. And boy did they look smart. Anyways, we were waiting and this khaire dude takes a ziplock bag, opens it up, and starts munching on a burger. I was staring at him and was completely shocked.
I am a Galaxian for those who have heard of that infamous school in Kathmandu. there, if one person was seen with a Wai Wai, that person would have to crumple it up, open the packet carefully and pass it around the entire row where the boys would sit without letting the teacher know. Otherwise he'd be told on..heheheheheh
So coming from that scenario..it was a huge shock for me...o and I had never seen tank tops or tube tops or halter tops or whatever on girls.....so for the first week....my hormones were flowing baby!!!!!!

in freshman year, i lived across a parking lot from an apple tree. in spring, i watched tiny witiish-reddish apple flowers bloom; i watched the little apple flowers wither away and saw tiny apples take their place. these tiny green apples grew and grew and finally turned red. i was surprised to see no one pick any apples.

so one day me and my roommate crossed the street and picked ourselves the besttest damn apples i've ever had in my whole life. they were so fresh and so fragrant and so crunchy and so juicy and so sweet.....apples from rolpa come a close second, though. when i told my roommate's mom, who was visiting during parents week, that we picked apples, she remarked "cool." that was my sentiment too....

Time traveller, your wai wai story reminded me of my school days also in Nepal. Every break period we used to play soccer and then eat wai wai on the next class after the break. This one girl was allergic to wai wai's smell and so she used to get really sick when we opened the packet which would be really funny to us.

Another shock was seeing all these dudes in shorts and Ts in freezing temperatures. I thought they were gonna die of hypothermia..

I got shocked when i saw this car in street. It was one of my the biggest cultural shock.

I was reading this thread but didn?t even remember what had happened to me. It was about 9 years so I almost forgot about it.
I used to work at a company ? overnight shift. Me and one Khaire was assigned to destroy the documents or throw them in the shredder. I dropped something off of the machine so I had to bend down to get it. As I was sitting on a tall chair, I supported myself by kinda putting my hand on his thigh?.. oh my god! You can?t even believe I was given a warning plus they made me sign some paperworks for the sexual harassment. By the way, I did not really know what ?gay? meant until then. When I think about it now, I get mad and also laugh at myself.
BTW, the guy who complained against me used my ride couple times and also mentioned to me once that he had piercing down there. Now, I think I should have complained and had put him in trouble!

After seeing that car on the streets, anyone could have a heart attack let alone a cultural shock!!

Biggest shock was there weren't any cows around..haha..

1. The hostel and and classrooms were in next building to each other. But the main gate was the same. At the main gate, one must open his/her shoes and change to slippers.

"मलाई मिल्नी चप्पलै(slippers) पाइन यार ह्याँ हिजो दिनभरि धुईँपत्तसाल खोजेँ। अस्ट्रेलियादेखुन के चपप्ल बोक्नु भुनेर ल्याइन। अब ह्याँ मेन गेटदेखुन भित्र जुत्ता लाउन नदिनी रेऽछ फेरि। क्यारम त नि खालि खुट्टाले आइदिएँ।" पो भन्छ।
