its a sad thing for nepal that 200 yrs of contribution from shah dynasty has become insignificant. Gyanendra might be a bad king or whatever, but he's not the only one in shah dynasty. Shah dynasty is the heritage of nepal, its our history, its our identity, its what brought us together, geographically , culturally and eomotionally. The freedom and pride that we rejoice today, the pride you feel within yourself knowing and telling others that, nepal never was under control of any nation, is because of shah dyansty.

Shah dynasty was a disaster in nepalese History. This slaughter house "palace" is full of Hatyara. Nautela Durbar Aaglaagi Hatya Kirtipur Massacre Bhaktapur Man slaughter Kathmandu Mallas Hatya Lalitpur Patan Jan Hatya Kirtipur Nak Hatya Bhandarkhal Parba Kot Parba Namita Sumita Pokhara Hatya Sunil Gurung Ring Road Hatya Chitwan Gaida Export and Khag Hatya Narayanhity Hatya Parba. Is that Shah Dynasty´s contribution??? .

Sayami, Nice Chronicle of Nepali history.. but Shah dynasty is only responsible for all this???? Why we think that they r the one who did it? Remember one cannot rule alone..it is always a team work...so blame it on a team not a single individual I guess..And do we know the reason behind it? Did we ever try to analyse why it happened? And yeah, the Unification by Badamaharjdheeraj..it was not possible without the bloodshed..hence the kirtipurs, Bhaktapurs and other parbas during unification. And yeah for other infamous parbas..we have all kind of people in the family..even in urs and mine so it is the same with Shahs...so if someone does sth wrong..the whole dynasty cannot be blamed... And go back to history how many times any Shah king was able to exercise his Power...I think it is just once or twice otherwise most of the time they always had a minor or insane king..so how cud we blame them? And remember the history has proved it... either kill or get killed..this is the norm of ruling....

i am not that sad. many nepaleses' tax money was being wasted in filling up these highnesses. Not only their immediate family but the whole nine yard that included their close associated and extended relatives were enjoying what in my opinion is unfair benefits and social prestige at the expense of rest of the great peoples of Nepal. yes, we had some good kings in shah dynasty but also rotten ones like rajendra bir bikram just to name one..the biggest contributer of course Prithvi Narayan Shah, a visionary. He was the one who started the unification. and i solute him. yes they are part of our history but so are the ranas, who i must admit were the worst thing to happen in our history.. u say they are our identity.. well they still are..after all they ruled over u and me for this long.. plus iam not sure how many Nepalese considered the Shahs to be a part of our true identity.. the state tried its best to make them a part of Nepalese identity by self promoting them by practicing hegemony in the forms of songs, stories, legends..etc... now, most nepalese don't feel a need forthem.. identity is a complex issue.. before Shahs unified us, we still had some sort of identity.. iam sure we will have an identity after they are gone..not too worried about it because i am not insecured about identity..i am still a proud nepali minus nationalism.. I have to disagree with mansion on one issue regarding soverignity.. it was the ranas who maintained our soverignity. they were the ones who shook hands with the british.. helped them.. in return, british stayed away from our internal affairs although don't be in a state of ignorance or denial about external affairs.. the east india comapny retained full rights of our external affair.. it was more of a compromise..while ranas looted us, devriped us education and exposure, they continued to cater to british demands like sending nepalis to supress the indian revolt, hunting trips, summer camps.. etc.. but yes they did stop us being under a direct foreign state.. but ladies and gentlemen, what kind of senseless pride is this? yes Prithvi Narayan Shah did see the southern threat.. but it was the ranas who faced the music from down south.. and it was them who pushed nepal into the age of darkness.. Shahs had 230 odd years to rule and prosper nepal. the results are out and anyone can see that they are less than satisfactory.. yes 107 of them was rana rule.. it took 107 years for a real king to emerge in Tribhuwan, who, for a change, acted like a king to lead against the injustice.. but nepalese cannot wait for another 107 to see more able king whom we were told to worship.. one more thing, the ranas came because of stupidity of a shah king and internal rajdurbar politics while rest of the population kept drifting away .....drifting and drifting.. well, i guess the drifting has stopped now, hasn't it?.. maybe we ought to seek for new directions instead of being comfortable with our (uncomfortable) past!!! what do you think?

Hi Cleopatra, Are you daughter of Rabindra Nath Sharma? Gyanendra promised him 10 Ropanis of 60000 if he does his job all right. He is exercising his barking duty in Pokhara. ..

cleo, a king is leader.. a captain of the ship, when the ship goes down, all fingers do point at the captain.. the captain like the leader cannot shift the blame. lets face it shahs had a lot of time... 230 years to give their inout..those parbas were mainly caused by their associates.. that is true.. but what kind of leadership chooses such deceitful subordinates.. the durbaria politics was nothing new.. if the kings did not have the forthsight to see the disaster, they did not deserve to rule over the great people of Nepal. why should 12 pusta have power and all the fun because prithvi narayan shah had the vison and the guts.. as i have said the ranas ruled for 107 years overver impotent and infant kings showing further flaws in the monarchy system of governance.. constitution monarchy could have worked.. but stupid gyanendra further split the country from maoist and the rest to.. maoist, political party to durbarias.. if only he could have united us like his ancestor prithvi narayan shah.....if only..

Live_wire, Here I go, nothing personal though..watever Ranas did, that is absolutely wrong..but if they would not have supported Brits...we would have suffered in the same way...and then it would have been those Brits not Ranas & we would have the same fate as the INDIANS...So in either way the people of Nepal suffered..but at that point of time there was no other option left for the countries in Indian Pennisula I guess.. Time my friend Time..... And wat u think abt now?We r still being ruled indirectly.....By whom a big question in itself of course..

How do you prove that King Birendra was not killed by Dipendra?? But you know who did it.. So you know atleast that murderer is still alive. People came to know the the real murderer of Gagan Singh only after 20 years . It might take sometime to rewrite the history all over again. .

Sayami, In life there are many characters, most of us only see the black & white character...but often we ignore the fact that our life is full of gray characters..and we r one of them... And there are few things which cannot be analysed...there is not always digital answer for every actions or happenings... And yeah there is always three sides of the story, ur version, my version and the true version...and history is always the writer's version...

we, as a country at this time have a lot more internal and external control that those dark times.. maybe u are referring that india has an influence..yes it does.. but nothing compares to those days, when the only foreigners allowed to enter were british.. not too sure if other form of government would not have negotiated with the british.. not too sure if other form of rule besides the ranas would supress education and provide it as a priviledge to a few.. not sure if others too would not have built private roads around their durbars, import parts of latest ford, make ordinary nepali coolies carry the parts for miles, reassemble them, and drive around their compunds in merry while other peoples continued to be deprived of basic rights and needs.. this was the time when the world was making ennormous stride towards development.. are u so shallow to trade off idependence for better human conditions?.. anyone could have done a better job than the ranas.. so what if india was colonized and made to lick britsh ass for so many years..look at them now.. usa was a colony too.. so what? look now... if we choose to make analysis using the if clause..we can wonder off to 10 directions.. but the fact is ranas did rule and it did have an adverse effect.. i would easly trade that piece of history with anything including colonization if it improved the plight of the great Nepalese people.. but then again these are "if" arguements.. but my point is, nothing should come between prosperity and people, not even the area within the man-defined borders what we call country.. people first please.. these hollow pride and nationalism is just useless and futile if people end up suffering!

Well Shah dynasty was about to come to an end anyhow it was just a matter of time.. i am kinda surprized at turn of events that occured in recent times. anyways life is about moving forward. who has done what in the past is just extra information ..what is being done at the present is more of a concern.
