I am planning to send an iphone 5 from sprint, unlocking it first. If i were to report it stolen, what is sprint gonna do to the phone? If they were to , say, lock it, would it work in Nepal, since its unlocked and will be using a sim card for a different carrier? Any suggestions or experience.

@MAXPAYNE: I thought about it but i have to pay almost 80 dollars each month and since I will be gone for three months. 240 dollars hawa ma tirna ali pachne kura bhaena malai . I only have to 50 on sprint. Even tho i Know it will be kind of hard to unlock it now , since I dont think they have the required softwares and stuff, how long do you think it usually takes for such jailbreaking and unlocking softwares to come out?

alchee, Sprint insurance is through the company named Asurion and this company do not cover insurance on iphones. Sprint iPhones can be insured only through Apple which is called Applexade and that cost 99$ for two year. That cover almost everything except lost and stolen. On top of that you can't unlock iPhone 5 anyways. If you're going back home, the best way is to put the phone on seasonal plan, which cost $8.99 a month and you can put it until 6 months but let me tell you that seasonal plan extend the contract for the amount of time you put it on it.

No, you got me wrong. If you pay $8.99 a month, all you can do is suspend your line for temporarily. That means during the time you're gone, your account will remain active but the line will be deactivated. This will help only reduce your bill. It doesn't have to do anything with your phone.

so, can you use Sprint or Verizon (CDMA) iphones with cell phone providers (GSM) in Nepal or do you need an iphone from a GSM carrier like ATT? are all iphones compatible with both CDMA and GSM netrowks, regardless of the carrier here in the U.S.? i have a friend in Nepal who's asking for a 4S.

Jantare, I'm not aware about the Verizon iPhone but talking about Sprint iPhone, as of now only sprint iPhone 4s can be unlocked and used internationally because sprint iPhone 4 doesn't have gsm capability. It doesn't have a slot to put the sim card. But iPhone 4s does have sim card slot and can be unlocked too. With that said you can send Sprint iPhone 4s to your friend in Nepal.

i've heard that 4S with ios6 can't be unlocked unless the carrier agrees to do so? is that right? has anyone been successful in unlocking a 4S (or pretty much any iphone i guess) running ios6?

Jantare, no HTC EVO 4g cannot be unlocked. The only sprint phones that can be unlocked are IPhone 4s, Blackberry 9930, BB world edition, and I guess there's new from Motorola that can be used in gsm too.

i just got a Sprint 4s 16gig for $260
looks like unlocking sprint/verizon 4s is a more expensive than unlocking an ATT. should i just have it unlocked in Nepal? where do you think it'll be cheaper to unlock? any takers here on sajha?

jantare, you can get the Sprint 4s unlocked through Sprint customer service. But not the regular customer service, you've to go through international call support representative. All you have to do is activate the device on any Sprint account and call them and tell them that you're travelling abroad so you want to get it unlocked. They'll submit the unlock request to Apple and tell you to restore the phone after couple hours. That's it and your phone will be unlocked. Good luck.

As of now I don't think so. But you can give a shot. As far as I know about iPhone 5, the sim card that's used on that device is way to smaller than that was used on 4s and that type of sim is not available in Nepal. But like I said you can give a shot. If I found out anything about unlocking iPhone 5, I sure will let you know.
