Police take into control Prachanda’s vehicle

Police on Tuesday took a jeep used by the Maoist supremo Prachanda under control after businessman Raju Shrestha claimed that the vehicle belonged to him.

Superintendent of Police, Dhak Bahadur Karki confirmed that police seized the vehicle, adding, “The vehicle is in Kathmandu District Police Office, Hanumandhoka. We will hand it over to the person who comes with legal document.”

The Nishan jeep with plate number Ba 5 Pa 1718 was in the parking area of Hotel Ashoka at Bagbazaar when Shrestha, a resident of Budhanilkantha, claimed that the jeep belonged to him and it was stolen. He then got into it and started the vehicle using the spare key he still retained.

But Maoist cadres surrounded the vehicle before Raju could drive away. As a scuffle ensued between Shrestha and Maoist cadres, police arrived at the scene and seized the vehicle.

Shrestha said the Maoists abducted him and forcefully took away the vehicle including some valuables on October 19, 2006. He also said the real number plate of the vehicle was Ba 5 Cha 1718.

Maoist Central leader Ananta said the Maoists were planning to return the vehicle on Wednesday.

“We told Shrestha to come to the police office with sufficient official documents. We will hand over the jeep to the “actual owner” after an investigation,” SP Karki added.

It is said that normally the jeep used to be used to ferry top Maoist leaders, including Prachanda. nepalnews.com pb Apr 18 07

Yes, he was a thief, and there won't be enough words to condem it. But blaming the whole system of democracy based on this would be short-sightedness. The exposure of news, and the courage of police to snatch the car from maoists, the raid of police on their cadres would not have been possible in without the existence of democracry. Of course, there're enough flaws on it, and corrupts like them, but I won't blame the whole system for it. The news like this would never be able to go through the censor on then autocratic monarchy, anything against monarch or the rulers would be taken as a big crime. Just because the news don't get published doesn't mean that it doesn't exist then. And yes, we should condemn maoists for these acts.

I don't read anything from pro- maoist supporters like Nepe and Newuser lately. Either they are enjoying the fat checks from the maoist exploitations or they are just revelling in the maoists atrocities.

IMI, I can't go to the level of extremists demanding to hang him to death. Yes, condemning is not enough, those theives should be brought to justice and jailed; that's all I can say.

It's misplaced optimism from hapless morons combined with those bastard leaders who have misled the uneducated nepalis by lying constantly to them, who have brought this state in Nepal today.

The fact that Prachanda's illegally gotten vehicle was confiscated and will presumably be returned to the rightful owner is surely a good thing.

Kudos to the policemen who intervened and the media for fearlessly reporting the story.

you are right ImI that user was a big defender of the maos ........ but looks like maos are in full throthle controll and will turn Nepal into a communist republic afterall.
No matter what we all write here, situation in Nepal favours maoist in the most akward way because they still flex their muscle, and create this atmoshphere of fear. I dont know who has the balls to stand in front of the maoist and kick them hard.......as for now they sure are enjoying every bit of the power trip they have gained............and they have no signs of backing down.....................so where do our discussions stand?????????.............
