I am having problems connecting my computer to the network. I just got a new desktop and when I connect the ethernet cable to the computer, the connection icon says "limited connectivity. The problem occured because the network did not assign a network address to the computer". But, when I connect the ethernet cable to my laptop, which I used to connect to the internet before, it works. I think the modem does not recognise my IP address, and I have tried doing ipconfig/release and renew in the command prompt but the computer still won't connect to the network. What else can be done?? Please help!!!

Is this your personnel connection or a connection from college/hotel etc? It sounds like your MAC address is not being recognized and being blocked. How are you connecting anyways? -LoGiN

Try restarting the modem, if not then reset it with your computer shut down. Let both get fresh IP. See what it does.

Try releasing ip in command prompt. Otherwise you might have a firewall in your desktop.
