I highly suggest all people to study comuter science. If someone is in Electrical Engineering, chemical engg etc, do change your major.

Any how most of the people work in IT. Why not to study CS now instead to regreat later.

I see people studying biology, maths, elec engg, history, photography, sociology etc and work in IT.

Remember, only and only Computer Science.

kiddo is right i have personally knows lots of IT folks who started out of business manor and now they not work are very successful IT folks but most of them are managers too. think about it 4 yrs of college 2 yrs of electives and prerequisites. 2 years of actual learning but that too only 1 or 2 classes that come helpful towards your actual job. that can be easily done in six months if you're really inclined to learn and put lots of hours in learning vs. 2-3 hrs of class and few more project time. also remember most professors have no clue about the new softwares and the IT market. some of these so called IT professors have graduated in the era when punch cards were used to input data , lucky if they learned their programming in green letter computer monitor of 80s. self learning if the only think you can take out of college if anything. don't get cocky about cs major.after all universities are business, they want to keep you there and make money out of you as much as they can and they can do that if they keep you there for 4-5 yrs.

Bibek, let me tell you something. Fake resume consultancies were the reason why I left the field.
Self taught doesn't mean I was fake. I invested day and night on learning my skills, for months. I got certified and demonstrated my skills during interviews. Back then (99), some of the firms actually tested your skills on the spot, I don't know how it is now.
I gave up the lucrative field for various reasons, one of which was when I interviewed 4 candidates and found out each of them had padded their résumé significantly...one of them was candid enough to reveal that he did it because "99% of the candidates are doing it" no shame at all.
Not saying the field is all screwed up, I am sure there still are core level coders with mad skills.

Bibek896,
Why you have so much hatred toward other fields? I am not sure what is your condition but it seems you were pissed off by your major.

I did my bachelor in EE and Master in EE too but I am working in IT field. I didn't lie of my resume. I started my programming from 1st semester in my bachelor. Just to let you know having EE degree helped me a lot. I learned Computer architecture, Database Design, C/C++, Java and many more programming language on my own.

It seems you are very ignorant. There are lots of jobs out there who has degree in maths too. Yes I agree some fields are over saturated but people are still interested on those fields because they love it. It is not about money all the time. In fact if you choose your career on the basis of money then I am sorry for you. You will never enjoy your job.

If you are in IT without a passion for IT then I am sorry for you and you will regret your decision soon. You should always choose your career where you are passionate for.

You are literally insulting other professions. Please respect other's professions and let them follow their passion.

By the way, I have been working in IT field for more than 10 years so don't ask me about my passion. I have interviewed many many people in my career. I have seen some people from other background doing exceptionally well and I have seen some people in CS field doing extremely bad because they are not passionate about their career.

So don't be such a judgmental and let them follow their passion!! Peace

What's wrong if people in other fields switch to IT? Who are you to decide if it's right or wrong? People can do whatever works for them; you're making yourself look like an idiot by calling names to people just because their opinions/actions don't line up with yours.

Well, if you see a good scope in CS and you are trying to motivate people to give it some thought, that's some good thing right there. And its gonna be useful to all sajhaites if you can channel your thoughts properly.

However, stop being a bully to everyone else who is not a CS graduate or dont intend to do CS. There are better things in life and there are multitudes of things that people can be passionate about.

Naam matra ko bibek, let me give u one example of my manager.
He was History student in UG but was working part time as construction worker. Later he worked full 3 years in construction job. Then he joined grad school as political science student. When he came out of grad school, he started to work as consultant in IT company. Whoa.....
Now he is chief architect of one of the top mobile app. He is up-to-date with all new major technologies in market (except .NET).

Now keep on advocating for CS major.

कुनै कक्षा लिनु भएको हैन स्वध्यन बाट हासिल गर्नु भएको हो |  It is all about interest: that leads to success.

Although I do not fully agree with the OP, We would be fooling ourselves if we do not agree on the fact that IT(Specially the one through dhoti consultancies) is one of the most lucrative field for us international student right now regardless of what you studied in your American university. And you may pretend to like a different subject and all, physics for instance, and you are thinking about making a career in it but deep down in your heart you know you are not all that happy. after all who would wanna be in a bizarre city of Midwest at the age of 27 still in school and only fun you know is riding a bike you bought in Craigslist while taking few mediocre pictures with your t2i you bought 4 years back. So if you are not in one of those top 20-25ish program and ur future looks kinda gray-ish, I would say for a god damn computer science. You will have a longer OPT and better transitional period in your IT job than your art major gorkhe counter parts!

I don't think you understood the original post and the responses that have followed. Nobody is saying IT is not a lucrative field; the point is about what should one study in school. Reading few postings above might help.

I also forgot to add this sentence...after all who would wanna be in a bizarre city of Midwest at the age of 27 still in school and only fun you know is riding a bike you bought in Craigslist while taking few mediocre pictures with your t2i you bought 4 years back while your friend who studied art is making a Benjamin ever hour...
