I have decided to get baptized and become a Catholic. I am in the US and know that my parents are going to be upset about this decision. They will probably disown me.

I want to know what kind of reaction I should expect from other Nepalese? My high school friends? Relatives?

I come from a middle-class family in Kathmandu. I went to St. Xavier’s School and NIST College.  I have been going to a Catholic University in California for the last two years.

I am very impressed by my catholic friends and their lifestyle. I have also had a lot of experiences that has helped me gain a testimony of the Bible. Having said that, I don’t think any particular religion is good or bad. I just think Christianity makes more sense to me and works for me better. Just like Hinduism or Judaism might make more sense to someone else.I am by no means a religious fanatic and don't plan to talking about religion all the time or trying to convert other people. I am just trying to know what kind of reaction I should expect back in Nepal when people find out I have converted to Christianity.

@everyone--A recurring theme in everyone’s response has been that I might be after some kind of a financial benefit just like the many helpless poor Nepalese that are being converted in the villages of Nepal.  You guys don’t know me personally so I won’t be able to fully convince anyone but the truth is I will gain no “materialist” benefit from this conversion.

@ meek__misfit ---"I was just curious to know if you would get a significant amount of fee charge deduction if you convert yourself. An answer is optional." Answer: I already have a four-year full scholarship and will not have to pay any tuition irrespective of my "religion" as long as I maintain a 3.0 gpa. So "fee deduction" is not an issue.@meek_misfit-- I initially got the scholarship because of good SAT II and SAT I scores. 3.0 gpa every year is just to maintain the scholarship. A lot of universities offer scholarships like that. They give you a four-year full scholarship but require that you maintain a certain gpa to keep that scholarship. If you are serious about wanting to know the school, send me an e-mail via sajha and I will email u.

Sorry guys, I had to delete some of the posts.I hope no one got offended. I apologize for it (if you did get offended). I have realized that a lot of people get offended if I delete their posts so I will NOT DELETE any posts anymore. Again, I am sorry for deleting some posts.

P.S. I am sorry if it's annoying to read me post the replies apologizing to people but it seems like a lot of people got offended. So I am writing replies addressed to those people.

Now that you have changed your religion to Christianity, what are you going to do? You are going to live like Jesus? You are not going to have sex until marriage? You are not going to use condom? HUH????

bro, its your life and you have to decide what is best for you. As per my life experience, I have struggled a lot because I did a inter caste marriage. When I was abroad, I thought it will be very easy to do what I wanted because I analyzed everything on the basis of my immediate environment i.e. outside Nepal. I was studying with American friends and in their case getting married with some one from same country is already most favorable situation. But when I was in Nepal, it was totally different. More than your parents, think of relatives and how their perception will impact your parents. I have cried many times feeling I have hurt my parents. I didn't realize this when I was outside Nepal.

This is a big decision and I suggest you to visit Nepal once before taking this big decision. Don't forget that when you arrive Nepal you will be put tika and you go temple with families. When doing all these, just assume that you have already converted to Christianity and see how the things will be. If it looks OK, go back to USA and change the religion. If you felt it is tough, rethink about it.

On the basis of my experience, it is very easy to think and plan when you are outside Nepal, away from family and relatives. But when you have to take same decision in Nepal, it's totally different.

Folks watch this video of Nepali Christians in USA. These people have lost their mind, soul and heart. They do not know what they are doing. Maybe in my opinion they sees Christianity as Superior to other religion and culture. That's what the church teaches these people in telling that Jesus is the only way to salvation. With such proclamation, Christianity are disrespecting & disrupting others  culture that have existed even before Jesus was born.
Also scientifically there's no way Jesus was conceived if Mary was Virgin.
The same culture that destroyed 90% of native Red Indians and Mayan civilization are now flourishing in the Himalayas. It is my deepest conviction that if we do not act now to save our remaining culture and tradition,  it would be extinct by next decade.

Why are you so narrow-minded??? why you want to become christian only? There are good and bad things in all religions...  your mind is not in good shape right now.. your thinking is so shallow... you are basically ficked up..

I haven't read all the comments. Will do that later.

I would like to share this Video especially with Confused_200 and Bob Marley or any other wannabe Christians.  But everyone can appreciate this video.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E_EXqdJ4L7I

And about"Bob's view  "Christian are progressive and realistic. I can tell you this from my experience that Judeo Christian values are far superior than us, period." I guess u don't live in the Bible belt, u don't know about Creationism vs evolution debate or Crusades. Further Sweden, Norway are far more better and they are majority non believing country.

Do ur research. And don't forget to enjoy the video. I would like all of u guys to comment on this video.

You want to know the truth

Most will think "Khun American Bhayesh" and bitch you at your back. You'll be better of not talking about religion at all to them. Beside that, you should be fine as long as you NOT start Jesus Christing them at a party when they are drunk.

Why delete my post, I didn't say anything offensive or used any foul language. I don't think I got too far away from the subject matter.

Don't cheat your family.  Religion is not as important as family .  If  you are going to hurt parents then why would you want to do it.

Seems like somebody must have braiwashed you. I have been to many churches. I went to catholic church they say they are too christian . I went to pentacost church they said they are true christian and others are fake. I went to mormon they said they are only true christian others are fake. Christians are confused amongst themselves.

You might say you are impressed with catholic friends life style. but reality is  e somebody is really pressurizing you to baptize. The truth is you want to get baptized because you have pressure from church people and nothing else. They are really good at it.

or else why  you couldn't go to church without getting baptize.

Just go and tell them , your parents and family would never accept that and you will stick to your own religion.

You want' to hurt your family go ahead.

dear brother you do what you think is right. . if you do something just to please your parents or to show the society without believing in it then that means you are not being  honest. honesty is the best policy my friend...Jesus loves us all even though your christian or not..we can give up on Him but He never gives up on us..its hard for me to understand one thing though why do people criticize christian for helping others.Jesus commands us to love one another ..He tells us to help the needy .and what do people mean when they say that they convert people by giving them money .. Its rather funny to me .. do people think that poor people don"t have brains that they cannot make their own decision .. they r humans too my friends and each one has a right to make their own decision.christians are big on giving they give to help the needy ..whenever any disaster strikes anywhere in the world its Christians who are there first to help people..by the way what do u think RED CROSS, Salvation Army or CRS  is? beside you cannot force someone to be christian.. its not about rituals ..its not that you get baptized and boom ur a christain its much more then that.. there has to be a personal relationship with  God.. you have to believe it in your heart and soul .. If you don't then your not a christian..  I know its very hard for a hindu i myself am a convert and it was extremely hard for me to hear anything against hinduism .but holysprit helped me to know the truth..have a open mind those who are confused just pray a little prayer .. Ask God to show you the truth.. its not complicated ..He is faithful if you pray from ur heart and honestly wanna know the truth He surely will answer your prayers. You know why because He loves you.. He loves you so much that He died for you..

lol.........mazarella..how often those missionary came to your door to make you convert? How often did they say you to pray pray pray.........and make you believe actually there is someone .   How they pressurize you?

Truth is, one should always believe in what he believes and grown up and not what other make you believe. If you go to mosque for few days they would make you believe there is someone called allah.

I am not pro to any relition. all religion are good. I was born as hindu.  But prirority for us should be to make our family happy. Don't just convert to other relgion bowing to the pressure.

You talk about holy spirit this is exactly what they have instilled in your mind.

Just think ,  why do you want to convert to christian when Jesus is just another avatar of Krishna.

-  Krishna and Jesus are both unnaturally concieved. Jesus infact was born from virgin
- Both were born in weird place. One in jail another in nook
- Both were royal
- Both were not god but one son of god anohter was avatar of god
- Both said whenever there is crime they will born again
- Jesus was shepherd who used to look after sheep krishna used to look after cows
- both talk about resurrection
- dictator wanted to kill both of them.

If they were different gods their stories would not have been so similar.  My theory is you already celebrate one form of jesus.  Your parents won't understand that but you should be wise enough to know it.  Don't hurt them.

If your decision to convert into Christianity depends on how people might react in Nepal, then maybe you are not ready yet. My issue is with the idea of conversion itself than it is to do with any particular religion. If you have found god and want to lead a spiritual life, do you really need to be labelled as a "Christian"?

Man u deleted my post.

Can u provide a reason for that????

Is it because I put some points which makes Hinduism sound better myth than Christianity????

Or because I put some non- religious people's name in there like Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens, and Sam Harris???

If u deleted for any of those reasons I pity u. U should not have such a weak faith Bro.

Read some books by them,  The God Delusion   by RD  A letter to a Christian Nation bh SH

and God is not Great (How Religion Poisons everything) by CH.

Watch a movie realeased the week before "Creation" it is based on true story. And we all know about the main character. Give it a try Man. May be u get some sense.

Any religion that talks about peace, harmony, love, respect, they are good. Crime and hatred makes a religion good or bad. If christain beleives in jesus, does good to society, helps victims of haiti, it is awsome. If i was a victim i would not care who gave me clothes or money whether hindu or buddhist.what you beleive , who you are, or you act the way they ( People of same religion) are. If u beleive, then thats what you beleive, follow obama, buddha, einstien, osama, mother teresa, but become your self. Buddha, Bhrama, allah, God, Jesus, everybody are creator of world. They are the one who are leading human kind, let them beleive if they beleive. IF YOU BELIEVE THAT MEANS U BELIEVE, only the problem there is some people cannot control, they are ready to do anything for their religion,  animal cruelity or caste problem or even race problem, the most focked up condition for human being religious war, wtf, that kinda thingscan not betolerated. U beleive that only your religion should survive or all people have to follow you, your preaching that cannot be accepted. IF you choose to be christian beleive in god, let other people beleive in what they beleive in, even, people like myself do not beleive in any religion but celebrate each festivals. i used to  celebrate dashian, tihar, holy, when i was nepal by cutting goat, playing cards and now i celebrate drinking beer with my brother. i didn't know christmas was that big of festival but when i came here i felt  i should also celebrate chrismas because it is only another day which makes everybody happy, excited, gifts in my environment, where i am rite now. So, what you makes happy, but do not go for extreme, Do not kill people because they are muslim or hindu or buddhist or whatever or none.
DO not follow any religion for crime. i do what my heart says, you live one life, by the way i dont know about reincarnation since science has not proved yet, if it proves i will definately beleive that, go for the facts, i do not have to think about religion if fire is burning and small baby is crying for help or if i have to catch a theif or if my dad is dying by cancer i would not worry my doctor is hindu or christian. And most important go for education, that is spirit, if you are educated then, definately you can differentiate between right and wrong, good and bad. Do not be  a follower, be a leader. u can choose whether you wanna sit in dark place and wait for light or try to hit two stones and carry fire in your pocket.
this is not my intension of me to make anybody feel bad about your religion, enjoy what you are and do what you like, Hey man let me tell you my dashain over here are not bad, you know y i talk with my family for hours that day and again after call ends i start drinking beer and dance. I had enjoyed dashain in nepal and i enjoy over here too. I do miss my family but not by any chance i can meet them that day, if meeting them is impossible that day, i do not  feel bad what i missed, i wanna enjoy dashain and empower them to enjoy dashain with me.
I am kinda high rite now and guess what its my bday today, and i am happy i got oppurtunity to see this world today.....yah thank you my parents for having sex.

@Namaskaar-- I deleted a bunch of posts so I don't really remember which one was yours. I hope you didn't get offended. I apologize for it (if you did get offended). I have been deleting posts that are long and posts that don't address my question "I want to know what kind of reaction I should expect from other Nepalese." I am deleting all the posts that don't answer my question at all and focus on proving which one of the two religions is true (irrespective of which side the poster takes). At this point, I am not really looking for feedback regarding which religion is better. I am just trying to know what kind of social consequences I should be prepared to face. For example most Muslims would expect their relatives to be willing to kill them for bringing disgrace to their family/society. I don't know if that would be the case with Nepalese. I am guessing that would be the case with a Hindu Family in some parts of India where people are "hardcore" Hindu (Shiva Sena). I have provided some background information about me and my schooling to help repliers understand my social-economic background. I appreciate your reply and contribution to this thread. I hope you have a good day/night.

I have realized that a lot of people get offended if I delete their posts so I will NOT DELETE any posts anymore. Again, I am sorry for deleting some posts.

@8848m-- I am sorry if my deleting some posts rubbed you the wrong way. My intention wasn't to offend anyone. I do really appreciate all the replies ( I know people are trying to help me). My only concern is that I have noticed that in sajha when people start arguing which one of two things is "right" then only 2-3 people get involved in that discussion and those 2-3 people keep writing to each other back and front trying to prove each other right/wrong.  I hope that made sense. Again, I do appreciate all the help and I apologize if my deleting some posts offended you. I hope you have a good day/night.

oie khate. It took me 30-40  minutes to find out all those answer and sources of mazarella and you deleted it.F off

You are purely asking about consequences question because you don't believe in chirstianity. If you have really seen chirst and truth and felt holy spirit you would have never been asking this quesiton here. There would not have been second thought of baptism.   You would have felt christanity is true and accepted it.

But it is clear that you are only bowing down to the pressure of missonary , friends and church.  Tell me i am wrong if it is not true. I doubt you have even felt holy spirit in you.

Just go and tell those missionaries, that you have tried hard. but so far not seen Holy spirit in you.  And for me it is difficult to change as my parents will be grately hurt. They would understand.

Unless you really feel holy spirit, you will not convert. and judging by your question you really haven't.

Just to let ya know every religion has some non sense stuffs but its yo faith that adheres ya to that religion. What do ya expect from the God that expects sacrifice of animals, what do ya the God teaches when he says eat my body and drink my blood: doesn't that sound weird?, what do ya expect from the God who used to smoke weeds? Blah Blah...Most of us know how weird hinduism sounds to non hindus but let me put some verses from The Bible most of ya have never read.

Exodus 35:2  Six days shall work be done, but on the seventh day there shall be to you an holy day, a sabbath of rest to the LORD: whosoever doeth work therein shall be put to death.

Just because ya work on sunday doesnot mean ya should be dead.right?

Deuteronomy 21:18-21  If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son who does not obey his father and mother and will not listen to them when they discipline him, 19 his father and mother shall take hold of him and bring him to the elders at the gate of his town. 20 They shall say to the elders, "This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious. He will not obey us. He is a profligate and a drunkard." 21 Then all the men of his town shall stone him to death. You must purge the evil from among you. All Israel will hear of it and be afraid.

Just because a son doesnot obey his parents doesnot mean,he should be stoned to death.what do ya think?

Luke 14:26  - If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his
wife and children, his brothers and sisters—yes, even his own life—
he cannot be
my disciple

ya donn have to hate yo family just to follow a religion. ??

1 Corinthians 11:14-15 -Does not the very nature of things teach you that if a man has
long hair, it is a disgrace to him,

but that if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For long hair is
given to her as a covering.

 A man shouldnot have a long hair.serious??

Deuteronomy 22:13-21 –kill those girls who are not
virgins when they marry.what the heck?how many woman will remain in this planet then??

      JUST THINK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
