I was watching television with my family, and suddenly one US reporter said, " we have again proved the world that we are the best sporting nation ". All of my family burst into  laughter after hearing that.

I know so far with 30 golds US are very far behind China with 46. World knows it.  So why is there a constant effort by US media to prove that they are number one sporting nation in the world. Don't make laughing stock out of yourself and accept the fact that China are the new superpower in sports.

I went through few American websites, and found that in every website they have put US on top , purely because they have won more medals ( lot of bronzes and silvers).

I have just one advice, being second is not mean achievement. That is very commendable performance. But try to prove you are still in top is ludicrous .  Every American media suffers from this egocentric disease. 

Funny thing is I went to the past olympics medals table on the archive and found out they have sorted out according  to the total number of gold medals won.  So why in this olympic they have decided to sort it out by the total number of medals won.

Don't be surprised from the next olympics if they sort out the medals based on the number of medals won in swimming pool.  Because in their most fancied athletics  they have been already been struck by lightning Bolt.

In a country with such a strong presence of media, media shapes the audience and audience shape the media.

 

The media tallies the medal counts and ranks by total number of medals not just by gold. That’s coz the public would only care if US is doing good and there is a good competition. Have heard anything about the Mens Soccer this year in US? Media has to sell its content, hence they rank it accordingly.

 

So it is a catch-22. Media shapes the audience and audience shapes the media.

The true ranking is ofcourse by the number of gold medals. And yeah, completely agree. Phelps is the best swimmer ever, not the best olympian. I think Lewis accomplishment is better than Phelps, for example.

You know why BBC is showing medal table in different order , thats because that way Great Britain comes up 3rd in the list instead of 4th if it was other way round(Russia has 13 more medals but one less Gold) !!

Why do you think NBC is topping the charts EVERYDAY ever since the Olympics started? I don't remember that happening, Specially for NBC, for long long time. Now guess what, there will be a new bidding for US TV olympics rights soon for forthcoming ones. You think only NBC will bid this time ???
And I hope you know, US media pays Highest price for Olympics TV rights.

I don't see it as pathetic, they are proud of their country to score many medals in total, so what's wrong with that?  It is very surprising when you said Marion John is your favorite player and have guts to compare with Michael Phelps and other good players. Common she cheated the game, it don't  justify to compare  someone who cheated in the game ,got stripped of the medals to the other who did some stupid things outside the game. Vince, BBC are showing China on top not because Great Britain will be in 3rd place  but it is the right way of tabling and has been always been like that . You say every country show the medal tally to favour them. But I don't see France24 Channel showing they are sixth. I have not seen Russia Today saying they are in third because they have won third most table.

To agree or not to agree is all part of yours. I wonder why few of the Nepalese are supporting wrong method of tabling  when other media from US itself are saying that it is wrong in the part of CNN and others trying to show US are on top of the table.
