I want to reduce my Nepalese accent and have a good neutral American accent!

Any suggestion, I'd be more than happy!

My friend I speak 4 different languages without accent, and the only advice I can give you is to listine carefully the way other speak, and prcatice it. Speak english as much as you can no matter how bad your accent is or lousy you sound, This is the only way.

I speak English everyday (maybe once in a blue moon I speak Nepali). You know the way we are taught in Nepal in boarding schools is so lame, each and every words that I've been taught from kindergarten is different from the actual American or British pronunciation. For example, schedule is pronounced usually in Nepal as sedule but in American or British English, it's skejual, you see, that is what I am talking about.

Any book/programme especially designed for we Nepalesse students to reduce accent?

The best way to gain accent is to do Shadow reading. I came to know about shadow reading while i was studying in british council.

It is the method where you will have a text script of some audio and you have to speak aloud along with the speaker in the audio. You have to speak at the same time and pace , pause when speaker pauses, and speak when they speak.

It is very good way of gaining native english accent. Personally i am happy with my accent. Because even many native speaker do not speak perfect englsih themselves. Many of them speak in a way which is not correct phonetically.

well brain juice . Schedule is pronounced as shed-yool in birtish english and skej-ool in american english.

Nepalese english is based on british english. So what you have been taught is correct.

Get an american GF, and ask her to help u, i mean correct u everytime ur toung bends gorkhey way. This is the fastest way.

Listening is the key. Listen carefully how the natives speak. And speak slowly not only trhough the front of the mouth as Nepali is spoken, but use all the muscles in your mouth and toungue. Makes sense?

Its not the American Accent that is important. Whats important is if ur in America, u want Americans to understand u.

Bathroom coffee i dont suggest shadow reading but university of cambridge does that. They had done research on that. They have also published books on that. I wonder if you have heard university of cambridge.

Do it and do something WELL. Do you get that concept MillionDollars?? Why are you so ridden with inferiority complex that you see everything and everybody is superior to you?? Nobody here is "embarrased" as you put it, by their whatever accent they might have. I certainly am not, neither brainjuice - as I understand. We all strive for excellence - do something well. In this case speak as the natives do. Anything wrong with that concept? You know it is not that high of a concept that even your size of a brain would not grasp it. Try, you might. I give everybody benefit of a doubt.

I marvel at people who speak foreign language - be it spanish, French, Nepali, Hindi without any (well any might be exaggeration - but you get my drift) accent. That tells something about that individula. Rather than looking at everything with your myopic vision - try to look at the forest.

And by the way, who is feeling inferior here ? I would say it's those beding over backwards to imitate something that is not naturally theirs. Fug the accent, just speak the way everyone understands you... My Scottish friends don't seem to be learning American accent even though they have to repeat them a few times in few occasions..

Exactly. ur scottish friends dont see a need to learn american accent. This thread was for someone who wants to learn American Accent. Its not mandatory to have an American Accent but if someone wants to learn, what the fug is ur fuggin problem. Quit humilating ppl here. There is no need of that. Stay happy with ur own accent and dont bullcrap on ones who want to change theirs.
