There is no doubt that the present autocratic government led by G has to be overthroen. I strongly sopport the peaceful movement by seven parties like all democracy loving citizen of Nepal. However, I am DISGUSTED that seven parties are silent about the latest series of violence caused by Maoist. If they are for peaceful movement, they should not be scared of maoist, they should be clear about their stance against Maoist. They should condemn it, and warn maoist that such violence means termination of 12 point agenda. Or they should also join the hands of maoist and go for the armed struggle. I think this is the double standard from parties. They can not dream of having cake and eat it too. They should be clear and honest about it. They should realize that they can not win at the cost of blood of thousands of security personnel. They (seven parties) would need all these security personnel if they get the power and if maoist did not lay down their arms. or the worst senario-against the foreign intervention. They have to applaud the bravery of security personnel. How will the army have faith on seven parties if they do not condemn the recent series of violence. what do you guys think?

7 parties are clear on their policy and each actions of maoist, its not necessary for the parties to react...The 12 points understanding nowhere mentions that maoist would give up arms or the parties are with the maoists for their every actions. its the king who has to react. Why should the parties react whose leaders are either in jail or underground. The king even doesn't spare the peaceful demonstration of journalists, bar association, human rights and so on? Why don't you generate thread against the king instead of trying to link up parties with the maoists, if you really a democrat.

All I am saying is that parties should make it clear that they denounce violence. It means condemning each and every actions from maoist that they do not support. Their silence means there is a tacit understandings between them. I am against of any kind of behind the curtain illigitimate nexuses. We, the people, have every right to ask what is their stance on anything that involves us. Once in a while, to be a democrat you do not necessarily need to loathe the opposition every time. I think you need to understand that as a supporter of the movement (or even those who oppose the movement) I have every right to question their decisions if it does not align with the overall interest of the nation. Our leaders are very autocratic down at the core, we need to nudge them constantly so that they would never undermine the popular mandate behind them. sajha used to be filled with hate against maoist. People still hate maoist for their atrocities. I will have to think about supporting the movement if parties do not make their stance clear. And that means they have to condemn each and every time maoist do something nasty.

"Their silence means there is a tacit understandings between them." aardvarak is right about the party who are quite and said nothing about recent Voilence in Nepal. 7 parties now forget how many of their members or leaders were killed by Moist because of difference in believe. 7 Parties don't have any gut to fight or speak against criminal Moist. If 7 parties united together against Moist I don't believe Moist will exist in Nepal any more. Instead of blaming King why don't they join hands with king. Reality is 7 parties will have more freedom than in Moist rule.

Aardvarak , of course, you have every right to question but you are indirectly trying to link of political parties with the maoists and like Kamal Thapa and Dr Tulsi Giri. Why do you have to mask yourself as a democrat to put forth this question? What do you think maoist should have done after the king showed his ass to the truce that maoist announced and followed for 4 months? The army took advantage of the truce and deployed army heavily in Rolpa and other areas of maoist stronghold and killed people to later to label them as terrorists. While the king terms maoists attacks as "Chhitputh Ghatana" and has no feeling for the death of Nepalese people ( be it a royal soldier or maoist), why are you so bothered about the parties not bringing a press release? Any kinds of violence is always condemnable and democratic parties always believe in peaceful movement. Friend, you have to read the manifesto of the parties, their objectinves and prorgrams. In the past, even UML or NC or SJM party members have been killed or turtured by the maoists. So? This is not the issue why parties do not respond to the Tansen killing. The issue is why the maoist had to end the truce and open fires again.

Ma Ta Nepali, can you list out the good things why the parties have to join the King? For what sake? Have you seen or heard anywhere in the world that active monarchy and democratic parties can co-exist?

' once in a while' you should know Moist broke their truce when Duba was on Power too. If you think Moist can give you better Nepal than 7 parties and king I have nothing to say. But 7 parties need to speak against violance. Communist is faliure system. 90% Nepali don't want to see Nepal become next North Korea. What do you think?

'once in a while' you right....active monarchy and democratic parties can't co-exist. If 7 parties give up corruptions and show their will to develop Nepal i don't think KIng will be active. All these suitions were created by Nepali congress' internal fight. And Giraj and Duba should take responsible for that! I believe in democracy but not the democracy we saw in Nepal (no decipline and corruptions)!

Once in a while-ji I do not expect and good deeds from Gyne. I have always been vocal against autocratic regime, especially the Gyne et al govt. It does not mean anything for Gyane, even when people are dying for him. But it should mean something for the seven parties who fight for people. They SHOULD denounce the killing, no matter who IS KILLED. Dont you think it would be unfortunate if NC denounces maoist only when NC cadres are killed. What about the unfortunate people? I think it is morally wrong if parties think that Maoist are good as long as they do not kill party cadre. NC and UML are for peaceful movement. If it means severing the ties with Maoist, they should even do that. You can not expect to grow a farm of Cobras and think that you are immune to it. If not today, the cobra will bite them tomorrow. After all Maoists started the movement with the tacit understanding with narayanhiti and killed so many NC and UML cadres. If it brings peace by forgiving them for the past deeds, lets do it. BUT How far you can be a "MUK-darshak" of a nara-sanhar of such vicious nature. It is ethically and morally wrong for parties to support maoist now.

7 parties dont have to react about the recent war in country. They tried their best to bring MAOIst in main stream politics. But the STUPID king and his team didnt even response. When the one sided truce was over the war was aspected. It was clear like light. The major problem of country is the king. IF The king will go away all political problems will go with him.

"It is ethically and morally wrong for parties to support maoist now". True. The only thing worse than that would be for anyone to directly or indirectly support Chairman Mahila Sahu and his goons.

Political parties do NOT represent the people, let alone the poor people. They represent themselves and their own classes. Better yet, they represent the netas, the former "village-elites", who, in the last 15 years, have become "urban elites", with a house or two in Kathmandu, and with sons and daughters either in fancy schools in KTM or overseas. Most of these guys are corrupt. Some are not. But you know the type: the Chiranjibi Wagles, the Govinda raj Joshi, the Ram Sharan Mahats, and so on. They are fighting NOT so much for free speech for all, a fresh beginning for all, and bolder political and economic reforms that widen opportunities for ALL Nepalis. They are fighting for their share of the cake, which they feel has been snatched away from their hands. Since they are fighting for their own share, they are NOT likely to change themselves to put the interests of the people they supposedly represent above their own petty interests. Hence, expect no change in the line-up of their netas. To get what they want, they'll hold hands with anyone and everyone. It's as simple as that. The royal establishment does NOT represent the people either, let alone the poor people. It represents the panchayati netas, the former "urban-elites", who, in the last 15 years, could not believe how they were pushed to the sidelines by the riff-raff from the villages. Through the sheer ineptitude of quarrelling political netas, these ex-Panchayatis are now back with a vengeance in this game of power. Sharad Chandra Shah, for instance, loves delivering a kick in the groin of those who, well, burnt his house in 1990. His type of people have NOTHING to do with the poor. They are back to defend their lost honor, and they are even willing to cut off their nose to save their face! The Maoists too are NOT for the poor. They just know how to use the poor. They have long discovered that the poor, especially the poor Magars, are expendable foot soldiers. One way or the other, the Maoists want to control the country, and they want to cause many people's deaths to get what they want. And the result? The parties keep silent when Maoists kill Nepalis because parties see such killings as being favorable to their larger interests. The royal establishment keeps quiet because, well, it has never claimed that it represents the poor. The Maoists, of course, kill poor people because, unlike for Nepali journalists, there is NO some sort of a World Federation of Poor People that could be breathing down the Maoists' neck if they kill the poor. So, killing the poor remains the cheapest, most effective and hassle-free way to signal to others that the Maoists are very much alive, and are not some lost power. It's like a political (and NOT ethnic) Yugoslavia really: each side looking out for its own short-term political gains, and then tearing at one another to get what they want even while the number of causalities goes up. oohi ashu

Thankfully, all these problems present opportunites. -- An opportunity to start pressing hard to make the parties accountable to the interests DIVERSE slices of the Nepali population. -- An opportunity to curtail the excesses of the panchayati government. -- An opportunity to defang the Maoists and make them 'internal' (as opposed to external) to the democratic political process. How one does any one of the above well is beyond me at this point, though I have been thinking back and forth about various possible solutions. I have no answer at present. I am NOT persuaded to take sides by the simplistic chants of "I hate the king" or "I hate Girija" or "I hate the Maoists". oohi ashu

Ashu, you are trying to say that all are bad...parties, king, maoists...all are bad.. But there are "bad, worse and worst" and given the choices, we have to choose the "bad"...There is no alternative to Democracy. The few leaders that you have named do not represent democracy.
