Hello: While I joined Comcast they send me a box which was free and was unable to watch HD TV. When asked about it , they will send new box which will cost 8.70 each month. Same as the cable box which cost 5 dollar a month and can be purchased free after mail in rebate which I got it and no need to pay every month. But I have no idea about the HD box, if I can buy a box that will convert single to HD? How much it will cost and any special web. Thanks for helping and why should I make fat to corporate American company, COMCAST.

I agree with perrybhadra. If you need HD channels, just plug in your comcast coax cable to TV and use your TV tuner to get the channels. However, you do need ATSC/QAM tuner in your TV which most of the newer HDTV comes by default. Again as perrybhadra mentioned, you will not get all the channels as some channels are encrypted. But you will get over hundreds of free HD channels.
I do use HD box from comcast but I did tried to tune in my HDTV directly using coax cable and I was able to tune in hundreds of channels for free. I have to use HD box because I have premium movie channels.

Do you get like Hindi channels, Nepali channels? And you can watch on tv right? Not a computer? Please reply. It is totally new to me.

@perry and bkshres I did the same way with my tv, connected the co ax cable directly to my HDTV. I run the channels scan and found 108 channels. Only 3 or 4 were hd channels like abc, food network but didn't find CNN, discovery, animal planet, TNT, espn, Palladia, etc. Yes the channels were in decimal. And they were repeated. They were digital not hd except 3 or 4. Any idea how to get all hd channels.

If u guys want a great quality then u need to buy HD Fta receiver which cost arround $300 and up, the anolog one is not bad either, I use ViewSat Ultra cost arround $ 80 and Weather Forecaster for viewsat ultra cost arround $ 100.00. You need DISH and should know how and where to point it. If you guys want international channel, u need two DISH hooked up. I was lucky casue I had Dish Network before so I didn't have to do anything.. just hooked up the FTA Receiver and it worked. FYI I've been using it for 3 yrs.
Here's the current list of the channel that u get.

I wonder why people need Cable Tvs these days. I had it for a year,then i figured out that i was just wasting my money and not watching enough due to my tight schedule.So i disconnected it completely. Currently, this is how i take benefits without paying a dime.
1. Installed Boxee on my mac. It wirelessly connects to my HDTV with some hacking involved and i can access any internet videos including Youtube or Hulu through my tv. So, here comes my TV episodes for free. My mac remote works perfectly for this.
2. I also have Orb installed in my Windows laptop. It wirelessley syncs and plays the videos/ music/ movies thats on my computer hard drive through Nintendo Wii Internet Channel. No hacking involved. This takes away the pain to hook up the SV cable whenever you need to watch videos off your computer.
Its kind a like having Cable and TIVO for free.

@furke
Do you already have the HD package or not? If you don;t have the HD package you are just going to get over the air HD channels like FOX, ABC, MSN ...
You need to have the HD package from your cable provider to get those channels.
Other thing you can do, though not recmommended is , go to the distribution box for your cable provider and find out which one co-ax serves you and remove the filter. Cable provider distributes all channels and depending upon your subscription they use filters to remove the channels you are not paying for.

Laa..Windows ko laagi ta thaha bhayena ta.
My assumption is, even if it works with windows, it would be a pain as you wont have that cool feature of selecting videos through the remote as Windows lacks the remote, unless you can do something with the bluetooth of your computer.

In the Living Room, Hooked on Pay TVOn Monday August 23, 2010, 7:04 am EDT It is a fantasy shared by many Americans: dropping cable television and its fat monthly bills and turning instead to the wide-open frontier of Internet video. Some are finding that the reality is not that simple. Just ask Bill Mitchell, a 40-year-old engineer in Winston-Salem, N.C. He canceled his Time Warner cable service and connected his flat-panel television to the Internet to watch sitcoms and his other favorite shows, using products from Apple and Boxee. His experiment lasted 12 months. Recently, grudgingly, he returned to his $130-a-month cable subscription, partly because his family wanted programming that was not available online. “The problem is, we’re hooked on shows on HBO and Showtime, like ‘True Blood’ and ‘Dexter,’ ” he said, adding that he wishes he could buy only the shows he wants instead of big bundles of channels he doesn’t. “It’s so frustrating.” These are confusing times in the living room. The proliferation of Internet video has led to much talk of “cord-cutting” — a term that has come to mean canceling traditional pay TV and replacing it with programming from a grab bag of online sources. But so far Americans are not doing this in any meaningful numbers. “Nor is there any evidence of it emerging in the near future,” said Bruce Leichtman, the president of Leichtman Research Group, which studies consumer media habits. This is all the more remarkable, industry analysts say, because it seems to defy the way the Internet has disrupted and challenged virtually every other major form of media — from music to newspapers to books. In part that is because the television business took action to avoid the same fate. Heavyweight distributors and producers have protected their business models by ensuring that some must-see shows and live sporting events cannot legally be seen online. Technology companies are pushing alternatives like Web-connected set-top boxes. But these are still not as easy as signing up for cable or satellite service, particularly for those who want to watch on a big flat-screen TV and not a computer. And so, in the battle for the living room, 2010 seems to be the year that the incumbent is strengthening its foothold. A New York Times/CBS News poll this month found that 88 percent of respondents paid for traditional TV service. Just 15 percent of those subscribers had considered replacing it with Internet video services like Hulu and YouTube. Younger people, though, are more intrigued by the possibility: respondents under the age of 45 were significantly more likely than older ones to say they had considered replacing their pay TV service. The poll was conducted Aug. 3-5 with 847 respondents and has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus three percentage points. Even through the downturn, the number of people subscribing to pay TV continued to grow. Cable, satellite and fiber-optic providers added 677,000 customers in the first quarter of this year, according to the investment firm Sanford C. Bernstein.
