More and more i realize that Nepal is loosing its future to foriegn countries...those lucky enough to get a good education and hence gain the ability to make change leave the country for better opportunities else where...this has always been a problem but more so now than ever..I know a good amount of people from a generation ago who actually did make it back to Nepal from studying abroad...unfortunately more and more of my peers who have a good college education are spending thier time working in gas stations or wherever abroad, after they graduate..yes I want to make money too...but somewhere inside it tells me I should go back...If there is any time to go back home it is now....this might seem cruel, but I believe it to be true..there is a saying "when there is blood on the streets, buy property." We can eliminate the risk of investing in Nepal if we all invest collectively more into it..we are at the lowest, there is nothing more to loose this is sad..but the greenest plants grow in the thickest ash...this is the time where we have to go in and make our future..at the same time we help the future fo other Nepali people who are infinitly less priviledged..But it is so hard to fight uncertainty in your own country when you know what to expect abroad. How do we stop this brain drain???

Plz tell me a good reason why do u want to stop the so called brain drain? why u r not talking about "managing" it or taking profit fro the country7 from it?

For every problem is it to STIP ot, when someone tells u water from river is casuing flood and loss of life will ur solution be stop the water in the river? i just want a little thinking and honest opinion plz, thanks.

You're making a mountain out of a mole-hill. There are more than 20 million people in Nepal. Not all of the educated ones will get the opportunity to leave the country for "better life" or whatever the reasoning is. This is not really a big concern.

Pretty decent ideas have been spelled out by the people out there.

i still see it as a very big problem....In a developing country like ours there is nothing more important than human capital and skilled wokers...one of the biggest things holding back our growth is the severe lack of skilled laborers...We cannot soley depend on remittance...what about our domestic economy?...the unemployment rate is close to 50%...remittance will not solve that...i am not against working abroad..matter of fact it is the only thing holding our country up right now...however most of our country men who work abroad also work very low skill jobs...waiters, bell boys etc...I am not referring to them as the brain drain...i am talking about people who study abroad and stay there...working in nice offices and living in the suburbs but sometimes also in the gas stations..we need thier skill and money...not too many educated people with money come back and invest in our market..even though right now it is very cheap to do so..These are the people needed in middle and upper managment, the skilled workers who have years of training and education in thier fields..investment is what creates jobs and opportunities and boosts productivity..yet the people we need to invest in and the people who have the money to invest are gone...

I have strong emotional connections to Nepal and high hopes and ambitions of doing things for Nepal. But... the unpredictable violence in Nepal in the last few years had gotten me thinking that until the country's future returns into our (janta's) hands, it might be better for as many of us as possible to accumulate experience and resources abroad while waiting for a more opportune time to return.

The events of the past month have changed things in Nepal and if the dark clouds continue to lift the way they have in recent days, then that opportune time may arrive sooner than I might have dared to hope.

I dont think brain drain is a problem in Nepal.

More people are being educated, in the process educated people have outrun the available opportunities.

Far more than this number of people are being educated and new area are being approached. I dont think brain drain is a problem. The best doctors of nepal are still there. The best engineers are still there. Lots of musicians are exploring new areas.

I also thought about the problem of brain drain in nepal .it is a very serious problem and not a problem to underestimate. i think to solve it first of all there should be the feeling of patriotism to all the nepalse.And the government should increase the salary of the individual and also provide job opportunties ...

Have you ever thought of stopping corruption? Once it is stopped , things will go accordingly and brain drain will slow down.

Answer is very simple. Create stable environment for skilled people to work and where opportunities would be available based on skills and not based on connections. Also create a society that would appreciate a person for who they are and their contributions to the society rather than for their social status based on their wealth and power. Also create the environment where parents dont feel that it"s uncool to brag about their kids settled abroad / in "estates"

The topic of the thread was " how do we stop" and the answers are very obvious to anyone.
The thread was not based on " who is supposed to stop". Answer to who is supposed to do it is a tough one because nepali society is highly hippocritical(i admit that i am no different that i am a product of that culture , took me time to realize it) where the same leaders who screwed up the country would send their kids abroad citing that nepal ma batawaran nai thik chaina.

I often wonder about how countries like US often gets world's best talents at their most productive stages without spending a penny on their education and childhood. It's like kaam garne kalu makai khane bhalu situation. Now if nepali society does not realize that they are proving to be kalus while some smart bhalu is reaping the benefits of their product not sure whose fault is it.
Again nepal is not the only country that is facing this situation. It's the story of all the developing 3rd world countries.

A job that people can afford to have a competitive lifestyle with.
